RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE GOAL OF A PLUTONIUM FREE WORLD
[Format for non-governmental organizations, city councils and all legislative bodies.]

WHEREAS, all forms of plutonium can be made into weapons, and commercial use of plutonium increases the risk that it may be used for military purposes; and

WHEREAS, plutonium is an ultra-toxic radioactive substance that lasts for thousands of years and one-millionth of an ounce of plutonium can be lethal to a human being; and

WHEREAS, the overseas transport of plutonium poses an unacceptable threat to the global population and environment through the risk of potential accidents and leaks; and

WHEREAS, despite the end of the cold war, plutonium continues to be produced, transported and reprocessed; and

WHEREAS, there is no known way to safely dispose of radioactive waste from plutonium production; and

WHEREAS, creating a world free from the use of plutonium is a practical step towards establishing a world free from nuclear weapons and less burdened by nuclear waste; and

WHEREAS, the well being of each individual depends upon a society free of the threat of nuclear devastation and radioactive pollution;

WHEREAS, generating electric power from plutonium-fueled reactors is extremely expensive, and many less costly, less dangerous energy sources are readily available, including wind, solar, co-generation, conservation and others;

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by

We declare our support for the goal of a Plutonium Free World, to wit:

I. A world free from the military and civilian use of plutonium.

II. An international ban on plutonium production.

III. World cooperation on regulated research for safe disposal of radioactive materials as well as international safe storage and management of all existing plutonium.

IV. An international ban on sea and air transport of plutonium until fully adequate safety measures for transportation are agreed to and established by the world community, and all such transport being undertaken only with the full knowledge and consent of the world community.
